What is "SIBO" Yogurt?
"SIBO" Yogurt is a cultured dairy product formulated for sufferers of “Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth” (SIBO). Really, it should be called it anti-"SIBO" Yogurt! It is aims to bring the gut microbiome back into balance using different live active cultures than typical yogurts.
According to Siboawareness.org, “[SIBO] happens when bacteria that normally live in other parts of the gut start to overgrow in the small intestine. This can cause bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and even brain fog or nutrient deficiencies.” (1)
In 86 Acres' "SIBO" Yogurt recipe, we use the probiotic strains L. reuteri, L. gasseri, and B. coagulans. Naturally found in healthy guts, these strains specifically colonize places where SIBO occurs and produce bacteriocins (natural antibiotics) that target SIBO-causing microbes. (2)
Compared to 86 Acres' regular Plain Yogurt, our "SIBO" Yogurt needs to be cultured at lower temperatures and for a much longer time (up to 36 hours, instead of 6-8 hours). The longer incubation means more breakdown of lactose in the milk, making the yogurt more digestible. (3)
Our "SIBO" Yogurt also contains inulin, a prebiotic dietary fiber that helps feed the beneficial microbes in the yogurt (and in your gut!) (4)(5). The inulin we use is from agave, a natural sweetener.
The recipe for "SIBO" Yogurt was first described by Dr. William Davis in his book “Super-Gut.” (6) To our knowledge, there has not been any scientific research into using "SIBO" Yogurt to heal the gut. As Davis says on his website, “the experience is preliminary and anecdotal, but promising.” (7)
